Did you know that some of your favorite personal care products might contain formaldehyde?

A recent article in Environmental Science and Toxicology Letters unveiled that many products sold in the United States include ingredients that release formaldehyde. Why, you ask? Well, formaldehyde acts as a preservative—maybe you remember its distinct scent from those college biology dissections! It helps prevent microbial growth, keeping products fresh. However, despite its usefulness, formaldehyde is listed as a known human carcinogen by the National Toxicology Program under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The study was conducted in part by African-American analytical chemist Dr. Elissia T. Franklin, who is dedicated to advancing environmental health and beauty justice. It examined numerous products for formaldehyde presence using data from the Taking Stock Study (TSS), a community-academic collaboration documenting product use among Black women and Latinas in South Los Angeles. Products like hair conditioners, mousses, hand soaps, and body lotions were assessed. Interestingly, the article reported that hand and body lotions, followed closely by body soaps and shower gels, had the highest number of unique products containing formaldehyde.

It is important to mention that while some products openly list formaldehyde in their ingredients, others might not. So, it is essential to familiarize yourself with formaldehyde-related ingredient names, which the article helpfully provides. A notable mention in the article is Bath and Body Works, identified for using formaldehyde-releasing ingredients in its lotions.

Stay informed and keep an eye on the ingredients in your products. Being aware and cautious can help you make healthier choices for you and your loved ones.
