Congratulations to all the students who have secured a summer research internship!

This is a fantastic opportunity to dive into the world of research and make a real impact. If you're feeling a bit nervous about starting your internship, don't worry—we've got some useful tips to help you shine!

 1.      Be Friendly and Engaging

First impressions are key! When you walk into the lab, introduce yourself with a smile. Share a bit about your background, like your home institution, major, and career goals. Show genuine interest in your lab mates—their roles, projects, and expertise are all valuable to your learning. Keep early conversations professional until you build more trust.

2.      Dive into the Literature

Get your hands on the key research publications related to your project. Understanding the background literature will provide essential context and help you learn how data is presented in your field. This knowledge will be invaluable when you're creating your own figures for presentations and writing manuscripts.

3.      Be Present and Attentive

Figure out the lab's usual schedule and sync your hours with your mentor’s. Aim for around 40 hours of lab time a week. Being present is crucial for getting help with troubleshooting and staying safe. Keep distractions, like social media and personal calls, to a minimum. Use downtime to read papers, chat with lab members, attend seminars, and enhance your professional growth.

4.      Ask Lots of Questions

Never hesitate to seek clarification. Don't worry about appearing inexperienced—everyone starts somewhere. Asking questions is a sign of curiosity and a desire to learn.

5.      Be Resourceful

Discover all the amazing resources your internship location offers—like libraries, career centers, and technical equipment. Dive into every tool available to explore your research and boost your academic journey, from the internet and textbooks to lab manuals and notebooks. Show initiative by seeking out new knowledge related to your project and field.

6.      Set Goals and Meet Them

Schedule regular check-ins with your research mentor to set clear daily and weekly objectives. Stay on track to meet your goals and watch your progress soar!

7.      Seek Frequent Feedback

Share your experimental results with your lab mates and invite their feedback. If things don't go as planned, tap into the wisdom of more experienced members for tips on improvement. Continuous feedback means continuous growth.

8.      Speak Up for Yourself

If you hit a bump in the road, don’t keep it to yourself. Reach out to trusted individuals—program directors, faculty, your mentor, or peers—for support. Whether it’s experimental challenges or interpersonal issues, the sooner you seek help, the quicker the solution.

9.      Immerse Yourself in Lab Culture

Join weekly lab meetings and department seminars, and engage actively. Aim to ask at least one insightful question each time to demonstrate your interest. Don’t miss out on informal gatherings like barbecues or sports activities—they’re perfect for bonding with your group!

10. Network, Network, Network!

Your lab is just the beginning! Connect with researchers in other labs whose work intrigues you. Reach out, introduce yourself, and arrange meetings to discuss their research or get a lab tour. Seminars are also an awesome way to meet new people. Remember, your internship location might become your future grad school or workplace. The more connections you make, the better you'll gauge if it's the right fit for you. Plus, building relationships means more options for recommendation letters for grad school or job applications!

11. Communicate Your Work

If your program doesn’t offer a chance to present your work, talk to your mentor about creating your own opportunities. Whether it’s a poster session or an oral presentation, sharing your findings is key. Also write a summary of your research in the format of a primary manuscript—this will be a valuable reference when discussing your summer accomplishments in the future.

With these strategies, you’re all set for an enriching and fulfilling internship! Embrace this thrilling journey, and get ready to make the most of your internship experience.

Have a great summer!
